Meudon is a commune in the south of the Hauts-de-Seine department, in the Ile-de-France region. The town covers an area of 9.9km². With a 2019 population of 45,818, its density is 4,628 inhabitants per square kilometer. The city occupies the hillsides along the Seine, as well as the surrounding heights, making it a commune with steep slopes. To the north of the town lies the Meudon state forest. It covers almost 1,100 hectares, spread over five communes: Meudon, Clamart, Chaville, Vélizy and Viroflay.
Meudon has 485 condominiums. 220 have between 11 and 49 lots, and 206 have fewer than 10 lots. Larger co-ownerships are rarer: 52 with 50 to 199 lots and 7 with over 200 lots. Over 60% of these condominiums are managed by professional syndicates, and 109 existed before 1949. Construction then fell off until 2000, and seems to have stagnated since then, despite a very slight increase.
Meudon has embarked on a project to fill in the Rodin quarry, which began in September 2022 amid protests. The project aims to fill in the quarry beneath the site, with a view to building luxury apartment blocks. Local residents are up in arms about the project, which will destroy the historic Arnaudet quarry, formed 60 million years ago and the source of the famous blanc de Meudon chalk. This is the only chalk quarry in the Île-de-France region classified as a remarkable natural site by the French Ministry of Ecological Transition. Opponents also point out that the project to build a public park and 28,000 m² of housing involves destroying the city's last lung, the only area of biodiversity in the area.
As a homeowner in Meudon, you'll pay an average of 45€ per m² in condominium charges, which can vary from 24€ to 56€. Current charges for an apartment or house in a condominium vary according to a number of criteria: the presence of a building employee to look after the garden, or a janitor, will considerably increase costs.
For example, if you own an apartment in a residence with between 11 and 49 main lots, you'll pay an average of €1,998 in running costs, or €166 per month. Conversely, if you live in a residence with between 50 and 199 lots, you'll pay an average of €2,525 in running costs, or €210 a month.
