The commune of Montreuil - formerly Montreuil sous Bois - is located in the Seine Saint Denis department, in the Île de France region. It is the second most populous town in the department, after Saint Denis, and the fourth most populous in the region. The city borders Paris, of which it is the southeastern suburb. Point zero of Notre Dame de Paris is 7.5km from Montreuil. With a population of 111,240 over an area of 8.92km², the density is 12,471 inhabitants per square kilometer.

Montreuil is committed to a 100% bikeable area, notably through its Plan Canopée, in which the Département de la Seine Saint Denis is also involved. Since 2020, temporary cycle lanes have been installed on avenue Gabriel Péri. These must now be made permanent and safe. The avenue's trees also need to be renewed. There is also a project to extend Métro 1. Fully automatic, it links La Défense to the Château de Vincennes station, crossing Paris from west to east. The project involves extending Métro 1 eastwards, from the current Château de Vincennes terminus to Val de Fontenay station, serving three new stations. This will improve service to parts of Vincennes, Fontenay-sous-Bois and Montreuil.
